Summary

Ancient class of Battle-Automata of the Legio Cybernetica, ancestor of the Kastelan and parent pattern of the widespread Castellax variant.

Lore

The Castellan-class Robot is an ancient lineage of Imperial Battle-Automata in the service of the Legio Cybernetica. Conceived during the Great Crusade as a mainstay of the Martian legions, the Castellan was developed for siege work, shock assault, and the elite defence of the Forge Worlds. Three times the height of a man, clad in heavy armour and protected by atomantic shielding, it is a hulking humanoid war engine renowned for its notoriously aggressive and responsive machine spirit.

The most widespread pattern of the Castellan-type is the Castellax-class, which formed the backbone of Legio Cybernetica maniples through the Horus Heresy. During that war, Castellan-pattern robots fought on both Loyalist and Traitor sides, and many were attached to Solar Auxilia cohorts and Legiones Astartes formations, sometimes bonded by oath-compacts and bearing the heraldry of those they marched beside. Thousands were broken on the wheel of war, and the Castellax was thereafter never again seen in such numbers. The modern Kastelan Robot of the M41 Adeptus Mechanicus is descended from this older Castellan-class lineage.

Armament

The Castellax pattern of the Castellan-class fields a brutal armoury suited to siege and front-line attack:

Its bulk and variety of weapons place it in a comparable battlefield role to the Contemptor Dreadnought, though it most often serves as a solid firebase laying down a punishing barrage of fire.

Doctrine

Castellan-pattern Battle-Automata are not free-thinking machines. Since the aftermath of the Heresy, robots of the Legio Cybernetica are governed entirely by doctrina wafers inserted into the chestplate, programmed and tended by Cybernetica Datasmiths who accompany the maniples to war. The Castellan obeys the Crimson Accords of Mars: it is among the chosen lesser and righteous works, a sanctified vessel of the Machine Spirit, not an abominable Silica Animus.
