Summary

A Knight Household is a feudal noble lineage of a Knight World whose Nobles pilot towering Imperial Knight war-walkers under sworn oath to either Holy Terra (Questor Imperialis) or the Priesthood of Mars (Questor Mechanicus).

Lore

A Knight Household is the noble lineage of a Knight World — a feudal society whose ruling families pilot the towering bipedal war-engines known as Imperial Knights. The Knight Worlds were colonised in the Dark Age of Technology and, when the Long Night fell, their populations regressed into serfdom: peasants toiled in service to lords, and the lords answered to House Princes seated upon their Thrones Mechanicum.

When the Great Crusade rediscovered these scattered worlds, the Households did not all swear the same oaths. The Adeptus Mechanicus and the Imperium of Terra each contended for their allegiance, and the division endures to this day.

Questor Imperialis and Questor Mechanicus

The Households of the 41st Millennium fall into two principal allegiances:

A third path exists: the Freeblade, a Knight without House — exiled by shame, tragedy, or simple wanderlust.

The Throne Mechanicum

Each Imperial Knight is piloted via a Throne Mechanicum, a mind-machine interface that bonds the frail flesh of the Noble to the mechanical might of the war-engine. The Throne does more than transmit will: it conditions the pilot toward fealty, loyalty, and piousness, and over generations it accumulates the psychic imprints of every Noble who has ever sat upon it. Those ancestor-shades may advise — or chastise — the present pilot.

The Throne is the literal seat of power upon a Knight World, and its lineage of imprints is itself a form of canonical record.

Bondsman and Court

Within a Household, fully-fledged Knights command lesser combat walkers (Armiger-class machines) through Bondsman abilities — a system of battlefield patronage and domineering neural relay. Such Nobles relay commands to their Bondsmen within a single lance, binding the warband into one chain of authority.

The broader court of a Household — its Exalted Court of senior Knights — carries the rituals, oaths, and prerogatives that make the lineage more than a family of pilots.
