Summary
Heavy combat-servitors of the Cult Mechanicus, halved at the abdomen and sutured to tracked motive units, deployed as Breachers or Destroyers.
Lore
The Kataphron Battle Servitor is a heavy Servitor employed by the Battle Congregation of the Adeptus Mechanicus, many times the size and power of the standard servitors used elsewhere in the Imperium. Like all servitors, the Kataphron retains a once-human brain, but it has been severed from emotion and independent thought, becoming a living weapon directed by the orders of the Tech-Priests of the Cult Mechanicus.
Many Kataphron donor-bodies were once wanted criminals — hive city gangers reinforced with vat-grown muscle, Inquisitorial enforcers who learned too much, deserters and convicts of every Imperial walk of life. The specimen is halved at the abdomen and permanently sutured into a tracked motive unit; its mind is hardwired with targeting cogitators, and its voice box is surgically modified to sing binharic praise to the Machine God.
Variants
Two variants are normally fielded, chosen by the controlling Tech-adepts according to tactical need:
- Kataphron Breachers — living shields and battering rams, designed to dismantle enemy lines and fortifications and deadly in close quarters. Armed with combinations of Heavy Arc Rifles, Torsion Cannons, Arc Claws, Hydraulic Claws, and Plasma Calivers.
- Kataphron Destroyers — heavy fire-support, with cannons replacing the upper limbs. Options include the Heavy Phosphor Blaster, Heavy Grav-Cannon, and Plasma Culverin — the last so volatile that the servitor’s own flesh crisps and burns even as targets are reduced to molten sludge.
Doctrine
Kataphrons embody the Cult Mechanicus tenet that the flesh is weak: of the donor only the modified brain is truly valued, the rest considered disposable substrate for the cybernetic war-form. In the field they are typically anchored as a fire-base, the Destroyers unloading firepower while Skitarii advance under their cover — a doctrine echoed in tactical guidance issued by the Cult Mechanicus’ own faction articles.
