Lore
The Skitarii Ranger is the long-march huntsman of the Skitarii, a once-mortal cohort whose flesh has been surgically pared away and clad in corpus-skitarii augmetic armour. In the rite of Flesh-shriving the aspirant’s body is unmade and rebuilt as a weapons platform; the mind is overwritten with shards of a thousand past lives so that the labourer who entered the chapel emerges a veteran soldier of the Machine God. Rangers are dispatched far in advance of the main Mechanicus battle-line, loping for weeks across hostile terrain on bionic legs, picking off prey selected by their Tech-Priest masters. They do not retreat, do not parley, and do not abandon a hunt; the quarry of a Skitarii Ranger is killed or the Ranger is.
Doctrine and Role
Where the Skitarii Vanguard fights at close quarters in the choking radioactive aura of its rad-weapons, the Ranger is a marksman and scout. Standard cohort doctrine has Rangers seize and hold sacred ground at the edges of an engagement, calling fire onto enemy command icons, war-engines, and unsanctified machinery. Their bionic stride lets them outrange and outpace baseline-human infantry, and their cogitator-augmented optics resolve targets at distances at which mortal eyes see only haze. In matched-play parlance the unit is a battleline scouting force: it advances ahead of the army and contests objectives the rest of the host has not yet reached.
Armament
The signature weapon of the Skitarii Ranger is the Mark IV Arkhan galvanic rifle, modelled in form on the antique flintlock hunting pieces of Mars’s colonial past but loaded with galvanic servitor-bullets that discharge the target’s own potential energy as a killing arc of electric force. From a ten-strong cohort, specialists may exchange the galvanic rifle for one of three sanctified patterns:
- Transuranic arquebus — a long-barrelled marksman weapon firing depleted-transuranic slugs at extreme range, used to slay armoured characters and light vehicles.
- Plasma caliver — a sun-hot plasma weapon with the option to overcharge, at risk to the wielder.
- Arc rifle — a vehicle-bane that lashes machinery with crippling electrical surges.
The Ranger Alpha that leads the cohort may bear a Mechanicus pistol and an Alpha combat weapon, and the squad may be augmented with an enhanced data-tether or an omnispex auspex-array.
Relationship to the Skitarii Vanguard
Rangers and Vanguard are sibling cohorts of the same order, raised from the same Flesh-shriving rite and clad in the same corpus-skitarii pattern. The distinction is one of role rather than caste: the Vanguard advances under the killing aura of its radium carbines, while the Ranger keeps its distance and kills with precision. The plastic kit released for both reflects this — one sprue assembles either cohort, the parts shared, the doctrine divergent.
