Lore
The Ironstrider Ballistarius is a Skitarii walker of the Adeptus Mechanicus built upon the Ironstrider Engine, an ancient near-perpetual-motion powerplant perfected in the early 33rd Millennium by the Tech-Priest Aldebrac Vingh of the Martian forges, who took inspiration from the stilt-legged seekers of the Sydonian Mask. Where its sister chassis the Sydonian Dragoon is configured for the close charge, the Ballistarius is configured as a stalking gun-platform — a two-legged walking artillery piece that prowls the fringes of a Skitarii maniple, picking out command targets and grinding enemy war-engines from elevated firing arcs.
Ballistarii are described in official Warhammer Community materials as providing fast-moving heavy weaponry to the Adeptus Mechanicus battle-line, and they appear as core heavy reinforcements alongside the Onager Dunecrawler in modern Mechanicus battalions.
Doctrine and role
The Ballistarius is a peerless marksman. Its rider, a Skitarii Vanguard wired into the chassis through a noospheric data-tether, has at command the anatomical data, weak-points and defensive doctrine of every xenos race the Mechanicus has so far catalogued. The Ballistarius is therefore deployed to decapitate: hunt enemy commanders, champions and spiritual leaders, and disable the war-engines of opposing factions — the most efficient means of degrading a hostile force’s operative capacity. The walker’s elevated stance and gyroscopically balanced gait permit it to fire while moving, fall back without losing its shot, and trample lesser obstacles to reach a clean firing solution.
Armament
As a mobile artillery platform, the Ironstrider Ballistarius mounts one of two cognis-pattern weapon systems on its forward arc:
- Twin-linked cognis autocannon — high rate-of-fire, anti-infantry and anti-light-vehicle role.
- Twin-linked cognis lascannon — anti-armour and anti-monster role; long-range, high-strength.
Both are cognis weapons: machine-spirit-augmented, fitted with broad-spectrum data-tethers that feed targeting solutions through the rider’s cortex.
Relationship to the Sydonian Dragoon
The Ironstrider Ballistarius and the Sydonian Dragoon are two configurations of the same Ironstrider chassis. The plastic kit released by Games Workshop is explicitly dual-build — a single sprue assembles either the Ballistarius gun-platform or the Dragoon lance-cavalry — reflecting the in-universe doctrine that the Ironstrider Engine is a single sacred design from which several battlefield roles are templated.
