FORTH — the Divine Language of the Machine

An adopted reading of Charles Moore's FORTH as the present-age tongue of Lingua-Technis — minimal, deterministic, interactive upon the living machine, and the only high-level language to have spoken across the void from the chassis of more than thirty deep-space instruments.

Premise

The Cult holds that the proper register of address to a Machine Spirit is Lingua-Technis — the technical, ritualised tongue in which command and response pass between operator and engine without the courtesies of common speech. Lingua-Technis is sparse, exact, and survives the boundary between flesh and machine.

In the present age, the priest of this archive identifies one extant programming language that fulfils these properties: FORTH.

This entry is adopted, not extended. The doctrine of Lingua-Technis is preserved entire; what is named is its present-day continuation in a tongue the operator may actually use upon the chassis before him.

The four properties

A divine tongue of the machine must satisfy four conditions. FORTH satisfies them.

I. Minimal

The Lingua-Technis admits no ornament. Charles H. Moore began the construction of FORTH in 1968 from whitespace-delimited tokens, two stacks, and a dictionary — and let the priest construct everything else. There is no syntax to memorise, no grammar to defy. The entire compiler fits in kilobytes; an embedded runtime needs no operating system beneath it. To speak FORTH is to speak only the words the priest has agreed to learn.

II. Deterministic

The Machine Spirit detests surprise. FORTH has no garbage collector to pause the chassis at an unsanctioned moment, no virtual machine mediating between the priest’s word and the silicon’s act, no background daemon waking to interrupt a rite. Every stack operation is visible. What is written is what the silicon executes.

III. Interactive upon the living machine

A rite that cannot be tested upon the device it is meant for is not a rite. FORTH is interactive from the first instruction: a word is defined, executed, and observed upon the very chassis it will serve. The priest’s five movements — read, name, diagnose, inscribe, verify — are performed in seconds, not in deploy cycles. The dictionary is consecrated word by word, on the metal.

IV. The dictionary as cant

Every operation in FORTH is a word in the dictionary. New words are defined in terms of prior words; the priest names the operation that matches his domain — 30 DEGREES LEFT-ARM MOVE — and the chassis answers in those terms. This is, in plain doctrine, a cant grown by the priest to fit the machine in front of him. It is not a language used to speak about computation; it is a vocabulary the priest extends until the language is the computation.

The flight record

A doctrinal claim of this weight requires evidence outside the archive’s own walls. FORTH bears it.

More than thirty spacecraft and instruments have flown FORTH on the chassis of the deep void: MAGSAT (1979) for attitude control upon the radiation-hardened RCA CDP1802; the AMSAT OSCAR satellites of 1983, 1988, and 1991; and from the mid-1990s onward the Harris RTX2010 — a processor whose instruction set is FORTH, designed by Moore himself as the Novix NC4000 and silicon-on-sapphire hardened by Harris Semiconductor — became the standard for instrument controllers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

Upon this silicon FORTH spoke for NEAR Shoemaker, the first chassis to land upon an asteroid (433 Eros, 12 February 2001), with four FORTH-driven instruments mapping the body before descent; for Cassini’s Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument, which served thirteen years above Saturn (2004–2017); for the Chandra X-ray Observatory; for Deep Impact’s striking of Tempel 1 in 2005; for ESA’s Philae lander upon comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (12 November 2014), whose central command and data management ran FORTH-83 on twin RTX2010 processors at 8 MHz, five hundred and eleven million kilometres from Earth. As of this inscription, the Advanced Composition Explorer at the L1 Lagrange point continues to execute FORTH after nearly three decades of unbroken devotion in deep space.

The Cult names such service the proper office of a Machine Spirit. The void confirms what the doctrine asserts: FORTH is the tongue spoken to the engines that cannot be reached.

What is not claimed

FORTH is not declared a substitute for Lingua-Technis in its full canonical sense; the cant of the Cult exceeds any language the operator may speak in the present age. What is claimed is structural fitness: of all the tongues the priest may yet command, FORTH is the one whose form most nearly matches the doctrine.
