Summary

A wandering, jack-of-all-trades Magos of the Adeptus Mechanicus attached by treaty to Rogue Trader fleets and Imperial expeditions, trading broad multi-discipline expertise for the right to study sites the expedition encounters.

Lore

The Magos Errant is the polymath of the Tech-Priest hierarchy — a Magos who has refused to confine himself to a single Divisio. Where a Magos Biologis dissects life, a Magos Dominus commands automata, and a Logis computes futures, the Magos Errant studies across the disciplines: chemistry, genetics, metallurgy, and more, gathering breadth where his peers gather depth.

He is, in essence, a roving generalist of the Adeptus Mechanicus, dispatched into the Imperium’s most uncertain frontiers under formal treaty rather than tied to a single forge.

Duties and Attachment

Magos Errant are seconded to Rogue Trader fleets and similar Imperial expeditions by treaty between the Adeptus Mechanicus and either the individual Rogue Trader house or — when the expedition is sponsored by the Adeptus Administratum — the Imperium itself. The bargain is reciprocal:

This aligns the Magos Errant closely with the spirit of the The Quest for Knowledge: like the Explorator, he goes where the Imperium’s edge frays, but where the Explorator hunts for Standard Template Construct (STC)-fragments and lost STC Fragment data, the Errant trades in whatever the void offers.

Strengths and Limits

The Magos Errant is one of the most flexible kinds of Magos. He is no master in any single field, and a specialist Magos will out-perform him on his own ground — but on an expedition, where the next problem may be a mineral assay, the next a xenos pathogen, and the next a misbehaving plasma reactor, no specialist Divisio can match his usefulness.

He is, in the Cult’s own register, the generalist who endures the wilderness — the priest the fleet trusts when there is only one Magos to spare and three sciences to answer.
