Summary
Ancient battle-automaton of the Legio Cybernetica, twice the height of a Space Marine, controlled via doctrina wafers by a Cybernetica Datasmith.
Lore
The Kastelan Robot is a huge, ancient Imperial Robot fielded exclusively by the Legio Cybernetica of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Built ten thousand years ago, the Kastelan stands roughly twice the height of a Space Marine — some four metres tall — and is constructed of solid metal beneath a ceramite hide that lets it stride through hails of fire without pause. It is a perfect example of the Cult Mechanicus’ rite of repurposing technology: the modern descendant of an older lineage of Imperial battle-automata.
Kastelans are slow, faceless, and tireless. Some are older than the Imperium itself and call no single forge world home; bands of these itinerant automata are said to appear as if from nowhere upon the field of battle and join the congregations of the Cult Mechanicus, a sign taken as great favour from the Omnissiah. Each Kastelan accrues character across millennia of campaign, and many are passed down within a maniple as relics in their own right.
Doctrine
The Kastelan’s only flaw is that of any mere machine: it follows instructions to the letter, even unto its own destruction. Because Abominable Intelligence is the direst of heresies, the Kastelan is denied true autonomy and is instead directed through the careful use of archaic doctrina wafers — fusions of bio-matter and electronics, often in shorter supply than the robots themselves. A specialist Tech-Priest, the Cybernetica Datasmith, must constantly update and reprogram the Kastelan via order dataslates, lest the enormous, clanking robot simply stride blindly into a nearby chasm.
The Datasmith governs the maniple’s behaviour by swapping doctrina wafers between three battle protocols:
- Aegis Protocol — defensive posture, hardening the Kastelan’s resilience and its Repulsor Grid force shield.
- Conqueror Protocol — assault-oriented stance, forsaking ranged fire to maximise the fury of melee strikes.
- Protector Protocol — siege stance: the Kastelan stands still and forsakes melee, instead doubling the salvo rating of its ranged weapons.
A Kastelan begins combat in Aegis Protocol and cannot change without the manual intervention of its Datasmith, who must remove the active wafer and insert another — often in the thick of battle.
Armament
The Kastelan is configured for either close assault or sustained fire:
- Kastelan Fists — barrel-sized power fists wielded as wrecking balls, striking with force enough to crumple the thickest armour or tear holes in ferrocrete.
- Heavy Phosphor Blasters — twin-linked carapace or arm mounts that riddle the foe with incandescent, glowing shot when the maniple’s ballistic subroutines trigger. See Phosphor Weapons.
- Incendine Combustor — a heavy flamer hurling great gouts of burning, thrice-blessed promethium across the battle line.
A Kastelan may exchange its Fists for two Heavy Phosphor Blasters, or its Incendine Combustor for a Heavy Phosphor Blaster, allowing the Datasmith to tune the pair toward melee, mid-range hosing, or massed phosphor fusillade.
